I was reading the message board over at www.backstagejbj.com and noticed a thread on the non-Jovi forum regarding the Bon Jovi Tribute band & the Goo's. Basically they were saying that Mike had requested that the band play "Bad Medicine" as the song that he would jam with them on. They were amazed that he was going to run...play...run, ect.

P.F. CHANG'S ROCK 'N' ROLL ARIZONA MARATHON PHOENIX; JANUARY 11
Race Roundup - page 117

In a word, debut P.F. Chang's Rock 'N' Roll Arizona Marathon was huge. A total of 24,031 runners packed the streets of downtown Phoenix at the start-the largest field ever for a first-time running event. Bus traffic delayed the start by 30 minutes, but no one worried about that much. Probably because 70 percent of the field were runners from outside Arizona, and had escaped freezing climes to run in 70-degree January temperatures. Mike Malinin, drummer for the rock group Goo Goo Dolls and an accomplished marathoner, ran the race, stopping to play with each of the bands along the route, which took runners from Phoenix, through Scottsdale, to the finish at Arizona State University in Tempe. It took Malinin five hours, eight minutes to complete his drum-athon. "I ran one mile, then sat down and played for four minutes," he said. "I took the Galloway walk/run program to a whole new level." After the race, 15,000 of us headed for Tempe Beach Park for the excellent postrace concert. That's right, the Goo Goo Dolls.

Marathon runners win bit of history
The most high-profile endorsement came from drummer Mike Malinin of the Goo Goo Dolls, who stopped to jam with each of 26 groups as he ran the marathon before performing with his million-selling band at a post-race party Sunday evening at Tempe Beach Park. "This stacks up well with the race in San Diego," he said after playing Kool and the Gang's Celebration with the 10-piece C.C. Ryder Express on a stage near the Phoenix Zoo's main entrance. Malinin said he enjoyed the diversity of music assembled by race organizers and then ran off toward his next stop.

Marathon runners received band aid
Drummer Mike Malinin of the Goo Goo Dolls ran the marathon and stopped to jam with every band along the way. The Goo Goo Dolls headlined a concert after the races Sunday evening at Tempe Beach Park. "That man is crazy," singer David Baumann of the Close Enough String Band said after Malinin played tambourine with the group at Central Avenue and Camelback Road.

Drummer pulls off double feat
Even before eating his body weight in P.F. Chang's food to prepare for the post-race marathon concert Sunday night, Goo Goo Dolls drummer Mike Malinin was feeling great about his day. The 36-year-old finished the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon almost an hour faster than he expected in 5 hours, 7 minutes, 53 seconds. The catch was that he stopped every mile to play with one of the bands along the course, which he figures added perhaps 90 minutes to his time. "My back started to hurt at 20 miles, which I expected from all the sitting," said Malinin, who ran with a buddy who does 50-mile ultra races with him. "I stretched it out and it went away. I literally went straight to sound check afterwards and felt OK." Malinin said many runners recognized him and knew of his plan, but at least one woman considered him to be a stalker. "I heard her say, 'Those two guys keep passing me then I don't see them again. They've done it five or six times,' " Malinin said. Malinin said he and Elite Racing Executive Vice President Tracy Sundlun hatched the idea of his running/ playing after a "long night of drinking" at the Rock 'n' Roll Half-Marathon in Virginia Beach, Va., where the Goo Goo Dolls also performed.

Mike Malinin, drummer for the Grammy-nominated Goo Goo Dolls? Embarking on an impressive pre-concert warm-up, Goo Goo Dolls drummer Mike Malinin will run the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon before performing that same evening with his band for the post-race concert. As an added bonus, Malinin will sit in and play a song with each of the bands that line the 26.2-mile musical marathon course. Malinin, 36, is an avid runner who has participated in several marathons and has recently begun participating in ultra-marathons. For the drummer, who joined the Grammy-nominated Goo Goo Dolls in 1995, running provides a symbiotic relationship with his musical talent. While touring with the band, Malinin averages 25 to 30 miles per week, squeezing in runs whenever he can between performances and practice. When at home in Los Angeles, he increases his mileage to 65 to 70 miles per week and is able to consistently focus on training.

And then there’s the RNR Arizona post-race entertainment group Goo Goo Dolls’ drummer, Mike Malinin. Oh, yah. He was there to perform on stage that evening. But that morning he ran the entire 26.2 miles in 5:08:15. Doesn’t sound particularly impressive? Until you learn that Malinin stopped at each mile of 26 to play one song with a band from among 50 along the route, before finishing!
